Dorothy N. V. Smith was born and raised in Salt Lake City.  She has always liked the arts and drawing. She has worked with many different forms of art. They range from drawings and oil painting to making flowers; arranging flower centerpieces, corsages, bouquets, upholstery and refinishing and tole and porcelain painting.

She has always love to decorate and create beautiful things. Drawing and painting were always her first love. She has many oil paintings of her grandchildren when they were young.

Dorothy started oil painting in 1968, when a young neighbor, who was attending the U of U as an art student, asked if she would like to learn.  This young artist was Ken Baxter, now a renowned Utah artist.

Some of her Instructors over the years have been Kay Fitzgerald Smith, Eleanor Zimmerman, and Floyd E. Breinholt. Dorothy’s paintings show her love for nature and detail. A variety of mountain scenes and streams give a feeling of serenity. Other works include The Girl in Red and Navajo Woman.  One of her paintings is in the permanent collection of the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City.

This will mark the first public showing of her work at age 90.tree collage
